The Avocado Pit Mystery: Why Won’t They Sprout

🥑 The Avocado Pit Mystery: Why Won’t They Sprout?

Okay, about those stubborn avocado pits...
You are so not alone if you cant get an avocado pit to grow anything ever, They're ’re infamous for playing hard to get. Here’s what’s likely happening:

💀 Why They’re Not Growing:

  • Too deep: If buried whole, they may suffocate before sprouting.
  • Too dry: Underground pits dry out quickly without consistent moisture.
  • Wrong conditions: They prefer warm, humid, tropical conditions to germinate.
  • No prep: Unlike compost scraps, pits need a little prep to sprout - like that classic “toothpicks in water” trick.

🥑 Want to Sprout One for Real?

Here’s the old-school method:

  1. Rinse the pit clean.
  2. Insert 3 toothpicks into the sides.
  3. Suspend over a jar of water (bottom half in water).
  4. Put it somewhere warm and bright.
  5. Wait 4–8 weeks for roots to emerge.

But full warning: Even if it sprouts, it can take years to fruit - if it ever does. Also, it might do nothing at all, I know I've tried it!

So for gardening? Bury those pits for nutrient value instead. They eventually break down and add minerals to the soil (and worms don’t mind gnawing at them either).
